Touched base with Shrigley and Spencer a few months back in prep for their profile pieces. Here’s a quick update as to recent happenings with each of the rising SoCal basketball prospects:

Matt Shrigley

Already an established prospect, Shrigley may have just begun to scratch the surface of his true potential. Recently bumped to a 4* by ESPN (overall 92, previously 88), Matt has LaCosta Canyon poised to grab a Cali D2 title and has San Diego State fans counting the days until the start of the 2012-13 season. Rivals remains a step slow as they continue holding Matt to a 3* rating. Once viewed as a “solid” SG prospect, his continued development now has Shrigley’s name linked closer to the “dynamic” side. Shrigley’s stellar play garnered a spot among the San Diego Section All-CIF First-team, and also landed the LCC standout Player of the Year honors. His long range jumper has improved and he appears more explosive/comfortable playing above the rim. Mix Shrigley with Skylar Spencer and Winston Shepard and it’s not a stretch to expect a preseason Top 15 ranking for the Aztecs. Any attempts to pigeon-hole Shrigley as a “perimeter” guy were put to rest (and captured on video) earlier this season…

Skylar Spencer
As mentioned above, Skylar Spencer is a key member of the dynamic ’12 SDSU recruit class. Always the defensive stopper, this season has also given rise to further development in Skylar’s offensive game.  Spencer has keyed the Price team to an impressive Playoff run and has the team one step away from a Cali D4 title. Add to that a huge honor in landing a spot on the D4 All-CIF First-Team and it’s clear Skylar enjoyed an impressive season. Spencer remains a shot-blocking machine and has made the move to establishing himself as a consistent double-digit scorer. Still a bit underrated as an ESPN 3* (89 overall), my guess is Skylar steps into the NCAA scene next year and immediately begins forcing scouts to second-guess the decision to keep him out of the 4* ranks. Future MWC foes need only catch a glimpse of the 1:27 mark as to what lies ahead…..
